*quiet drumroll*
IT LIVES!!!!!!!!

*ahems politely and takes to the front of the stage*

My website is now live. Please bear with me on at least one page, as I slowly but surely fill in the photography gaps. At least one of which shall be filled tonight.

Please clicky the link - http://www.silkandsteel.co.uk/ and tell me what you think. Is it shiny? Do you like the colours? Is it easy to navigate? Would you buy based upon it?

It's up to me to update it now, so fingers crossed I don't break it too much!

*feels proud*

In other brief but amusing news, I am apparently supposed to be bored at work - according to the Metro today, Administrators have a 10 on the boredom scale, as their jobs are the most unfulfilling....

The website looks very slick, can't find any problems with it :)

I've been waiting to see this!

It's a lovely website, very professional. It makes me want to buy things *grin*

Could do do a FAQ (or at least some more information) in some places - a lot of people know what they want, not everyone knows what it's called or what is being illustrated.

For example (yes, I know the answer to a lot of these):

What's flat steel/spiral steel boing? Why do you use that instead of plastic stuff? Does it bend enough to be comfy, I'm only used to Top-shop style 'corsetry'!? Can I see pictures of what it looks like on its own and in place in a corset?

Gnereal on additionals:
Need to see them both in situ on a whole corset, and in sufficient close-up to see what they are.

See whether you can get a better picture - the stitching on that particular sample is a bit wobbly!

Hidden busk:
I'm busy seeing harlequin here, not noticing that the fastenings at the front are invisible - a close-up might help, but a 'quieter' fabric might make the difference more easily seen!

Again, people may not know what or why this is - it helps you avoid wasting time & materials on the finished piece, so explain & recommend it, don't hide it away in the lace and trimmings!

(Actually, that's a more general point - it might help to order the page a bit more intuitively: style, mockup, base fabric, and only then list the remaining additionals!)

Pricing of Fabrics/Additionals: Personally, I'd put "Add £5" rather than just "£5", it's clearer.

Gallery: I'd be tempted to shove this on a separate page, rather than cramming it together with the ordering system (it makes it clearer that you've reached thew bottom of the ordering stage, for a start)

All in all though, it's looking shiny - I just think you're assuming a bit too much prior knowledge from your readers.

More a glossary than an FAQ, then.

Woot! I'm a thumbnail!

I like the website, it's clean and clear and easy to navigate - good stuff!

I'll try and get pics for you of the silver skirt this weekend, I may actually have a chance on Sunday to nobble my housemate for photographs.
becky_spence: fred blue hairbecky_spence on July 27th, 2006 11:17 am (UTC)
that'd be grand :) I can add you to the costuming page then!

Hurry up and make things and take photos of them, so that you can fill the pages with all the missing pictures.

I like the pages though.

I think Caroloines comments are very good critisims, her mentioning the gallery has made me think - it would be cool if you had a catalog page that listed everything you made with a small thumbnail, short description and price, and then extensive galleries. Something for the future prehaps?
becky_spencebecky_spence on July 27th, 2006 11:18 am (UTC)
I'm working on it. One I should get pictures of this weekend, one I should get tonight, then there's only 2 missing - one of which I'm starting to make this weekend so should get the picture by next week.

I didn't want to do a catalogue page as such as I didn't want to give the impression I could _only_ make those things, I wanted pictures as an example of my work, that people could work from...

Oh... and I'll be up for an overbust at some point, my boobs are tricky things and I def need made to measure in the overbusty style.
Chris Venuschrisvenus on July 27th, 2006 08:44 am (UTC)
That's a really cool website. My only real comment from looking at it is that on pages like http://www.silkandsteel.co.uk/costuming.php the navigation is cool but occasionally a little hard to read. Not that I can't read it, just that I can't read it easily at a glance. I think its because its aeffectively a green font that occasionally goes invisible as it either gets too thin or it has white highlighting on it that gets lost on the white backing. eg look at the d in "bridal". The loop around the top gets a bit light and at a glance my brain doesn't immediately draw the link to make it a d rather than some weird other letters.

I'd certainly buy from it though. I'm just trying to work out what sort of costume I want. I don't think the coresetry or wedding/evening stuff suits me... :)

And I assume you want us to pimp this to friends all over the place? :)

Looking pretty good to me.

By the way, do you want to swap links for mutual benefit and gain? My wishlist site has a section containing links to cool online stores. Plus I'm certain there some of my users who are corset wearers/buyers.

very impressive! worth the wait!

only thing I would say, is to say that the veil is made from 'veiling' rather than 'netting' - it sounds posher, and I would look at it and assume you make very stiff veils! but then thats probably only me because of the job I do.
becky_spence: Inara the warriorbecky_spence on July 27th, 2006 11:19 am (UTC)
thank you! I will change that - I just wasn't sure how to refer to it since it was just in the shop on a roll labelled "bridal netting"!!
Nat: NatNetGauzeautumnpsyche on July 27th, 2006 11:12 am (UTC)
Oooh, very shiny indeed. :-) I see what you mean with the picture you need now, I'll try and get a suitable one to you quickly. I'm not sure if I can get one as nice as the ones already up there, I'll try my bestest. £10 for a mock-up is a total bargin, I think I'll start getting them if I try out any new styles. Let me know what you think about doing a reproduction vintage one. I'll send you a pic or two along with the one you need.
Nat: NatLightsautumnpsyche on July 27th, 2006 11:17 am (UTC)
PS Whan I say vintage, I'm not sure what era the design is from. I think the one I own goes back to maybe the 40s/50s but it's a reproduction itself and was used in shows ect. For some reason I'm inclined to say the 20s but I have no idea why, and I could easily be wrong.

Actually it's not too bad, for the time it took and from some of your comments, I expected it to be a real dog. Some brief opinion:

The good:
Photos are lovely and really give a feel for the products and personality behind the show. So much kudos on those (to Karohemd?)
Your measurement info and buyers stuff is nicely detailed. It gives the buyer confidence.

The so so:
Order page: Some clarification of how the form fits into the process would be worthwhile.
Navigation. It's a bit unreadable.
Page flow is a bit squiffy in non Internet Explorer browsers (numbered bullets on the measurements page overlap the navigation). Text flows disjointedly.
Get some alternate text on images that don't have it, particularly the site title and navigation. Search engines (and anybody with images turned off) will appreciate it.

Yes, most of the photos are mine (where Andreas Beck is credited).

Thank you for your comment about the photos. I'm quite happy with them, too. :o)

Generally looking good!
I love the pic of kinkykay on the frontpage (the one looking over her shoulder).

Interesting observation: On the front page, the purple frame around the photos is a touch lighter than the purple background of the page. Most people might not notice this but on this high contrast display it definitely shows up. Another thing to look at.

In the pirate coat section, the landscape pic of you and H fighting just looks out of place and doesn't really fit in. It's a good pic but I'm not sure it's necessary. You get the billowing effect from the one of you nicelz enough.

Shall I try and find another pic of the Dangerous Liaisons dress so you get three choices? (I thought I had sent you at least three each).
